Assignment for JAV130: Visual Strategies

The theme of this work is based on censorship. Coming from Hong Kong where political unrest has led to a crackdown on the freedom of speech and press by the enactment of a national security law, I wished to spread awareness of the law’s far-sweeping effect on ordinary life, such as the closing of multiple news outlets and 10,000 arrests made. By appropriating a telephone advertisement through painting and creating a phonebook of dissidents with mark-making on translucent tracing paper, I wish to highlight the importance of communications and transparency in a functional democracy

Digital collage on plotting paper

The theme of this work is based on the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine. While its build-up was obvious, the original aim of the work was to explore Putin’s authoritarian nature through his suppression of domestic affairs. With the outbreak of war, I wished to document it through collages of artificial and poor images provided by the Internet. By digitally cramming 80 images onto a 100 by 100cm physical frame, I wish to highlight the overwhelming number of horrors happening in real time and how access to instantaneous coverage affects the overall appearance, as well as behaviour, of the war.

UNION DISSOLUTION

IB Visual Arts Exhibition 2021

Dystopia is a state of society associated with the future where great suffering or injustice exists. While it is often imagined, how do we know when dystopia has been achieved in reality? This exhibition explores the possibilities of dystopia subconcepts like totalitarianism, technology, consumerism and development. When characteristics on dystopia can be readily seen in real life, where does reality end, and where does dystopia begin?
